The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) was funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to work with Middle Peninsula localities (Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex Counties and the Towns of Urbanna, Tappahannock, and West Point) to update the 2021 Middle Peninsula All Hazards Mitigation Plan (AHMP). The Plan evaluates all hazards that may affect the region and proposes mitigation strategies to reduce the impacts of future hazardous events.

Below is the 2021 Plan Updated timeline (updated 11/9/2021):

  • Organize Resource- September – December 2020
  • Community Assessment/Profile- January to February 2021
  • Revise Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment- January to March 2021
  • Coordination with Tribes- December 2020 to October 2022
  • Revise Mitigation Plan- February to April 2021
  • Public Outreach and Education- September 2020 to November 2021
  • Draft AHMP submitted VDEM for review - November 2021
  • Draft AHMP submitted to for FEMA Approval - December 2021
  • Adoption and Implementation- December 2021 to May 2022
  • Project Closeout with VDEM- May 2022 to October 2022

Middle Peninsula All Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

(Duration: March 1st to March 15th) - CLOSED

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) was funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) to work with Middle Peninsula localities (ie. Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex Counties and the Towns of Urbanna, Tappahannock, and West Point) and Middle Peninsula Tribes (ie. Rappahannock, Upper Mattaponi, and Pamunkey) to update the 2016 Middle Peninsula All Hazards Mitigation Plan (AHMP). The AHMP assesses all hazards that may affect the region and proposes mitigation strategies to reduce the impacts to citizens, critical facilities, infrastructure, private property, public property, and the natural environment from future hazardous events.

Final Amended 2021 Middle Peninsula All Hazards Mitigation Plan

MPPDC staff received notification on March 24, 2022 that the AHMP has advanced to approvable-pending-adoption (APA) status for all Middle Peninsula localities. As of May 23, 2022 all Middle Localities adopted the regional AHMP. The final amended plan encompasses the 3 federally recognized tribes (ie. Pamunkey, Upper Mattaponi and Rappahannock). The amended plan advance to APA status for Tribes on May 4, 2022.
