Middle Peninsula Water Supply Plan

This study explores both groundwater and surface water resources on the Middle Peninsula, and provides partial fulfillment of the agenda set by the Middle Peninsula Groundwater Study Committee. The GW committee was formed for the purpose of obtaining a greater understanding of groundwater issues, information needs, and management measures necessary to address local government concerns regarding the quantity and quality of drinking water. The group formed as an appointed committee of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, with members representing the counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex and the towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna, and West Point. The Drinking Water Action Plan is one of several methods used to carry out the goals of the GW committee.

This report addresses three subject areas prioritized by the Middle Peninsula Groundwater Study Group:

The report provides data collection and monitoring information by identifying current resources and assessing the ability to meet future needs with those resources.
The report provides water quality information by exploring the affects of land use practices on groundwater, and by identifying saltwater intrusion potential.
The report provides education through greater understanding of the dynamics of groundwater and of the connections between groundwater and surface water.
