Middle Peninsula Historic Marker Tour

Native American History and Culture

Chief Powhatan

The Middle Peninsula is fortunate to be rich in Native American History. The area was home to Pocahontas and Chief Powhatan when Jamestown was founded.

Mattaponi Chief Custalow

Today, the area is the location of the only two reservations in Virginia, those of the Mattaponi and the Pamunkey Indian Tribes. There is also an effort to gain recognition for the Upper Mattaponi Tribe.
