Come and join in on the fun at the Third Annual Dragon Run Day on Saturday, October 13th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Thousand Trails Campground. This beautiful resort is located on the shores of the Piankatank River, just downstream from the mouth of the Dragon Run, and it is indeed a fitting place to celebrate the Dragon. With a wealth of rare and unusual species harbored in its pristine waters, the Dragon is a natural treasure worthy of preservation. With the goal of increasing public awareness of this ecologically critical watershed area, this FREE event features fascinating hands-on exhibits, presentations, nature walks, demonstrations, and of course, food concessions.
We’ve got lots of partners to help us share the Dragon’s natural, cultural and historical heritage. Landon Ward, aka “the snake man”, will charm the crowd with his snakes. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science will have a touch tank and fish tank, as well as educators to lead the fish printing, animal tracking and seine netting activities. Virginia BioDiesel Refinery will demonstrate how soybean oil is made into finished biodiesel fuel, and Cardinal Waste Services will demonstrate how trash does - or doesn’t – decompose. Sam Motley will have a portable sawmill on site to demonstrate how logs are sawn into lumber. Sullivan’s Pond, a local organic farm, will show how paper is made, and Turtle Island Sanctuary will be on hand with a wildlife rehabilitation exhibit. Got old tools or household items with possible antique value? Bring them with you. Assessors from Sandy-Woodlawn Antiques can tell you if it’s junk or treasure.
In addition to the educational hands-on exhibits, learn about wetlands on one of the marsh tours or take a guided tree-identification walk. You also don’t want to miss our four diverse presentations on biodiesel fuel, the oral history of the Dragon Run, the flora and fauna of the Dragon and Native American culture and heritage. Various crafters will demonstrate their handiwork and offer hand-crafted items for sale, plus there’s live music all day!
With so much going on, plan on making this a day-long event. We won’t let you go hungry. In the “Rivah” way of things, a wide variety of delicious seafood as well as a selection of other food items will be sold by Thousand Trails.
Thousand Trails is located on Route 198 in Gloucester County, 5 miles east of Glenns. Ample free parking is available. This is a rain-or-shine event with most activities under cover, so even if it rains, come on out anyway.
Dragon Run Day is co-hosted by the Dragon Run Steering Committee, The Friends of Dragon Run, Thousand Trails, the Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership/Virginia’s River Country and the Tidewater Resource Conservation and Development Council. It promises to be a fun and educational event for the whole family, so mark your calendars today! Then on October 13th, bring your friends and family and enjoy a day in the outdoors, eat good food, and help us celebrate THE DRAGON. Hope to see you there!
