Slide notes:
During the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment stage in the plan development process, the RAMP committee will be using a newly-released software package, HAZUS-MH, to estimate the impacts of floods and hurricanes on the Middle Peninsula.
HAZUS-MH is a multi-hazard risk assessment and loss estimation software program developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The name: HAZUS stands for Hazards US and MH stands for Multi-Hazard.
This is a tool we can use to help us plan for minimizing damage and loss of life to prevent natural hazards from becoming natural disasters
Covers Earthquakes, Floods, and Hurricanes
The nationwide databases included with HAZUS are non-proprietary and therefore can be easily shared.
HAZUS-MH has been designed with an open framework that allows additional local datasets to be easily merged into the existing databases, allowing customization of the databases to produce more accurate results.
Janet Nestlerode, of the MPPDC staff, is attending a training session on HAZUS-MH in May. The next 7 slides briefly summarize how HAZUS works and the rationale behind using it for this step in the plan development process for the Flood and Hurricane hazards.
