Middle Peninsula All Hazard Mitigation Plan
The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission has completed a comprehensive All-Hazard Mitigation Plan for the Counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex and the Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna, and West Point. The purpose was to create a detailed multi-jurisdictional plan aimed at reducing the harmful effects of natural hazards on our communities.
The finished plan (MPAHMP) was approved by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Participating jurisdictions with an adopted and federally-approved hazard mitigation plan thereby become pre-positioned and more apt to receive available mitigation funds (such as the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) program and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)) before and after the next disaster strikes.
AHMP Mission Statement
To make Middle Peninsula residents, communities, government agencies, and businesses less vulnerable to the effects of natural hazards through the effective administration of hazard mitigation grant programs, hazard risk assessments, wise floodplain management, and a coordinated approach to mitigation policy through state, regional and local planning activities.
What is Mitigation?
Hazard mitigation is defined as any action taken to reduce or eliminate the risk to lives and property as the result of a disaster. This can include anything from carrying flood insurance to removing homes from the floodplain, or from building a tornado safe room to having winter weather and hurricane "survival kits." All citizens can and should play a part in making America's communities more disaster resistant.
